Loudoun Farm Products
The Rural Economy of Loudoun County has continued to do well in 2009; continuing a more than decade long rearrangement of the commodity foundation of local farming. The results of these changes is a diversified and prosperous rural economy producing and offering higher value commodities, many new consumer-oriented and value added products, and open-to-the-public services at local and rural venues.
The Agricultural Census for Loudoun in 2007, the most recent year for which detailed statistics currently exist, shows that Loudoun’s farms are more diverse than ever:
1,427 farms and 142,452 acres in farms
( 70% of farms are less than 50 acres, with a median of 24 acres)
468 farms with a woman primary operator (largest number in VA)
21 farms with a Spanish/Hispanic/Latino operator (largest number in VA)
24,000 head of cattle, 5395 acres of corn and 2847 acres of soybean production
Largest equine population in Virginia, approx. 15,500 horses, valued at $208,855,000
4th largest hay producer in the state, with 64,300 acres of production
Approximately 3000 head of sheep and lambs
116 farms with a total of 1457 goats
31 alpaca farms (largest number in VA) with 350 alpacas (2nd largest population in VA)
29 llama farms (2nd largest number in VA) with 376 llamas (the largest number in VA)
26 farms growing 67 acres of apples
22 farms growing 21 acres of peaches
14 farms growing 13 acres of pears (the largest number of farms & acreage in VA)
10 farms growing 24 acres of nuts (the largest acreage in VA)
30 farms growing 58 acres (the largest number of growers & 3rd largest acreage)
Berry production more than doubled between 2002 and 2007
24 wineries (the most in the state) and 358 total grape acreage (2nd in the state)
14 farms producing 13 acres of cut flowers (the most cut flower growers in VA)
20 farms producing 395 acres of nursery stock (the second largest acreage in VA)
Greenhouse and high tunnel production has increased to 22 farms and 112,500 sq feet
38 Christmas tree farms (the 2nd in the state) totaling 702 acres (3rd largest acreage)
Residents can buy a subscription to a full season worth of fresh farm produce through one of Loudoun's six CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) or can buy local produce and meats from one of the many farmers markets throughout the County.
