Loudoun County is a great environment for raising sheep. The U.S. Census of Agriculture estimates in 2005 there were 2,000 head of sheep in Loudoun County, up from 1,500 head in 2004. Sheep are produced for wool and meat. With a growing ethnic population in the Washington DC area, demand for lamb continues to increase.
The Loudoun Valley Sheep Producers Association was
formed to promote and support the Northern Virginia area’s farm flocks,
providing education on all sheep issues including health, management
and marketing; promoting lamb and wool, encouraging and mentoring youth
and promoting fellowship and camaraderie amoung the members.A
